Health, Safety and Environmental Considerations

There are many chemicals and by-products that must not be disposed of in your sewer drains, such products can cause damage to our sewer system, homes, businesses, and wastewater treatment plant.
Please use caution when disposing any products in your sewer line. Below is some helpful information for you to learn and know:

  • Contact your local wastewater treatment facility, public works director or building inspector to verify which chemicals can be put down your drain.

  • It is illegal to dispose of any pollutant into any sewer drain, drainage ditch, stream or the ground.

  • It is Illegal to put anything other than domestic wastewater into our sewer mains. Do not put biodiesel or chemical byproducts into our sewer system.

  • If you produce Biodiesel contact City Hall for our Building Inspector and Public Works Director to perform and inspection for your safety, and that of others, in addition, you must contact DNR, EPA for permits, and your biodiesel must meet the ASTM standards and pay taxes on your product.

  • For information on how to dispose of chemicals, or products contact City Hall our your local Health Department, Department of Natural Resources, Environmental Protection Agency, Building Inspector, or Public Works Director in the City.

  • If you intend to manufacture biodiesel for your own use, please contact the following agencies for possible permit requirements:
Environmental Protection Agency, National Biodiesel Board, City Fire Chief, Public Works Director, Building Inspector, or our local Health Department. These agencies will determine if there are regulations on storage tanks, as well as the type, location, quantity and concentration of chemicals stored on a property taxes to be paid to the Federal Government. Depending on the above factors there are certain fire permits that may be required.

  • Please understand that if you make biodiesel, the Crude Glycerin which is the byproduct must be disposed of properly. People who make biodiesel must understand that improper disposal in sewer systems, lakes, streams and our landfills can and has caused critical damage to fish and environment.
