In
October of 2005, the department established their first canine unit with the
assistance of local Wal-Mart and other area businesses. The department
currently has one active team consisting of a working dog (Zak) and his
handler, Officer Nick Cusanelli.
Officer Nick Cusanelli and his canine partner “Zak” a 2-year-old Belgian
Malinois respond to patrol request for drug searches, tracking of suspects,
missing persons, building searches, warrant services, locating of evidence
and public/educational demonstrations. Officer Cusanelli and Zak also
provide assistance to other agencies on an as-needed basis.
Annually Officer Cusanelli and Zak must demonstrate their proficiency to the
North American Police Work Dog Association to remain deployed as an
operational asset. This requires constant training of the team to maintain
a high level of readiness, ensuring the citizens of De Soto that the K-9
unit is prepared for any situation.
Officer Cusanelli has recently completed a police dog trainer accreditation
with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department. He is currently finishing
an apprenticeship with the North American Police Work Dog Association to
become a nationally accredited trainer.
In
their off time Officer Cusanelli and Zak enjoy taking long walks, playing
fetch in the park and relaxing at home.
