Here are several things you can do to help prevent becoming a victim of crime:

  1. Avoid entering personal information including, social security number, bank account information on websites you do not trust
  2. Never give personal bank account information over the phone.
  3. If it sounds to good to be true, chances are it is.
  4. Do not open emails from people you do not know.  These emails can sometimes contain virus.
  5. Do not share pin codes or passwords with other people.  A debit card pin number should only be known by you.
  6. If you see something or someone that looks suspicious contact police.
  7. Check your credit report at least once per year.  You may obtain a free copies once a year at www.annualcreditreport.com

Recently we have had reports of people receiving phone calls from alleged members of their family.  They are saying that they are in Canada and that they have gotten into some type of trouble generally, with the police.  They ask for you to send money via Western Union.  Be sure that you are 100% sure who you are sending money to.  As always call your local police department and we will do what we can to help you.  In 100% of the cases that we have had in De Soto have been a scam.  In most instances if money is sent there is little to nothing that we can do to recover your funds.  Remember to always check and then double check before sending money.

When in doubt you may always contact the De Soto Police Department with questions or concerns.  The Non-emergency number for the Police Department is (636)586-8891.
